In search for Rivendell

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

A valley full of springs and waterfalls, it is known to become Tolkien’s inspiration for Rivendell. And the neighbouring Jungfrau, Mönch and Eigen became the Misty mountains peaks in The Lord of the Rings (namely, Caradhras, Celebdil and Fanuidhol). We took a three-day stay in this beautiful place and explored the valley and the mountains on both sides.
Day 1. Lauterbrunnen and Trümmelbach waterfalls.
(A lot of specifications but) this ten-waterfalls chain is the only example in Europe of accessible glacier-waterfalls inside the mountain.
Day 2. Jungfrauhoch, Top of Europe.
An observatory Sphinx is sitting just in between Jungfrau and Mönch, giving access to the glacier for a lot of regular tourists.
Day 3. Schilthorn and Piz Gloria.
Famous for its place in James Bond movie, where it played a hideout for villain scientist.
